The transport of freight that does not require the entire space of a truck is also known as less than truckload (LTL) shipping, whereas full truckload (TL or FTL) shipments take up the space or weight limit of an entire trailer.
The main advantage to using an LTL carrier is that a shipment may be transported for a fraction of the cost of hiring an entire truck and trailer for an exclusive shipment. Also, a number of accessory services are available from LTL carriers, which are not typically offered by FTL carriers. These services are usually billed at a predetermined flat fee, or for a weight based surcharge calculated as a rate per pound or per hundredweight.
How much does it cost to ship LTL freight?
LTL freight rates vary based on a number of factors including the type of freight being shipped (freight class), as well as its dimensions and the distance it will travel. LTL shipping allows multiple shippers to share space on the same truck. It is cost efficient, with multiple companies paying for their portion of trailer space.
INTERMODAL FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION
Intermodal is the use of two modes of freight, such as truck and rail, to transport goods from shipper to consignee. The intermodal process usually begins with a container being moved by a truck to a rail, then back to a truck to complete the process.
